A honest, first-hand mega guide
I tried TikTok Live for one month as a tarot reader. On my best week I made $150. Here’s everything I learned — and why I stopped.
First Things First: How the Money Actually Works
Before you go live expecting a windfall, you need to understand TikTok’s coin economy.
Viewers buy coins and send them to you as gifts. Each coin costs about 1 cent. TikTok pays you roughly half of what you earn in gifts, plus some bonuses if you’re consistent. So a 300-coin gift translates to about $1.50 in your pocket. They pay out once a week to PayPal (at least in the US).
It’s not nothing — but going in with realistic expectations matters.
Set Up Viewer Wishes (Not a Cashtag)
Here’s the single most important platform tip: keep everything inside TikTok. Don’t push people to a $cashtag or external link. Use Viewer Wishes instead.
Why? Viewer Wishes push you in the algorithm, keep your queue organized, and make the whole experience feel seamless for viewers. You can set up to 20 different “wishes” — each one is a reading type paired with a gift of your choice.
Here’s how I priced mine to start:
- Yes or No (1 min) — 249 coins
- General Reading (1 min) — 299 coins
- Career Reading (1 min) — 349 coins
- Love Reading (3 min) — 400 coins
Start at around 300 coins for a yes/no reading. You need to stay fully booked at first with no lulls — lulls kill your momentum in the algorithm. Get the reps, build confidence, then raise your prices.
The Killer Tip Nobody Tells You: Accept Heart Me Gifts
This one is huge and almost nobody talks about it.
Accept Heart Me gifts — at least while you’re building your community. The difference is literally 2x across the board: more viewers, more gifts, more activity, more profit.
Here’s how I made it work: I labeled my Heart Me viewer wish “Yes Or No Limit 1.” It’s not officially supported by TikTok, but the honor system works surprisingly well. I also let people skip the line if they sent an additional gift, which some viewers actually prefer to avoid waiting.
Be Patient. Seriously.
Your viewers are distracted. Many of them are in full “is he coming back?” mode when they stumble onto your live. They’re not fully paying attention, and they will ask the same questions over and over.
You will have to repeat yourself. A lot. Things like:
- “How do I get a reading?”
- “There is a line, please be patient”
- “No spamming” (when someone types their question repeatedly)
Don’t get frustrated. Every repeat is a chance to introduce yourself to someone new. Use onscreen Boards to cut down on how often you have to say the same thing, and bring the good vibes every time — because someone is always watching for the first time.
The Hard Truth: Live Is Not Sustainable Long-Term
I want to be real with you. On the days I didn’t go live, I made nothing. And Lives take a lot of energy — which meant I skipped days I meant to show up, which hurt my growth.
A few things I noticed from the data:
- Consistency compounds. People like an everyday rhythm, and you can see the compounding effect in your analytics when you show up regularly.
- Lives drive followers more than regular posts — especially when you show your face or bring a strong vibe.
- Aesthetics matter. Natural lighting beats indoor lighting. Showing your face beats not showing it. But something is always better than nothing — don’t let perfect be the enemy of showing up.
In my 28-day window I clocked 30 hours of live time, reached 21.6K total views, gained 702 new followers, and had 1.1K gifters. My total estimated rewards for the month hit $379.61.
Should You Try It?
Yes. Absolutely try TikTok Live.
It’s not a get-rich-quick situation — the pay-per-hour math can be humbling. But it’s genuinely great for building real connections with people, growing your following fast, and practicing your readings in a high-energy environment. More than once it warmed my heart in ways I didn’t expect.
Go in with a plan, use Viewer Wishes, accept Heart Me, stay consistent, and be patient with your audience. The rest will follow.
